Great Island

Chequessett Neck Road, Wellfleet, MA 02667
The entrance through the dune to Great Island in Wellfleet, Cape Cod.

Known as “The Gut”, Great Island is a long stretch of beach jutting out between Wellfleet Harbor and Cape Cod Bay. Don’t be scared off by the name, The Gut is one of the more peaceful and scenic beaches on the Cape. You’ll have to do a good amount of walking, so it’s not ideal for kids or those with disabilities. Ultimately, how far down the beach you want to go is up to you. If you’re feeling adventurous you can take the entire 3+ mile hike to the tip, Jeramy Point, for some truly amazing ocean views. There are two parking areas with access to The Gut: the shoulder of Chequessett Neck Road for town passholders, and the Great Island parking lot for free.
